未來影響及應用：
糖尿病視網膜病變與老年性黃斑部病變，分別是世界上40-60歲及60歲以上人口失明的首因。我們的研究結果發現這兩個重要疾病，可能存在共同的致病機轉。避免糖尿病患者併發視網膜病變，將可減少患者以後罹患老年性黃斑部病變的機會，進一步降低失明的風險。往後的研究可進一步來了解及證實這兩個疾病病程間的關聯性。
