About Us
On behalf of our entire staff, it is a pleasure to welcome you to Tzu Chi Institute of Eye Research (TCIER). TCIER is an International Institute for the study of the eye, vision neurosciences, and related disorders at the cellular and molecular level. It established in 2014 after the decades of basic, applied, and clinical research in the field of community vision and neuro-ophthalmology. Whether you are a current student, researcher, independent scientist, or collaborator, we invite you to collaborate on the neuro-ophthalmology research to provide better healthcare services to patients.
The institute aims to provide an academic and scientific platform for the student and researcher having an in-depth curiosity to work in the vision research. The Institute not only provides the research platform but also request to join our team for cutting-edge research for the restoration of the vision in the patients. From the Institute, our team has been continuously providing the scientific contribution by publishing high impact research finding in the well-reputed journals and also by delivering the scientific talks in the conference, seminars, private institute, and the biotech industry. Currently, our research team has been working to understand the molecular mechanism of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), regenerative medicine, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) for the development of functional photoreceptors for transplantation, and also therapeutic approaches of the retinal disorders, etc.
TCIER is dedicated to our mission to conduct research with direct clinical relevance and translational value, with the main aim of discovering fundamental knowledge and intellectual property in the field of ophthalmic and vision research that will lead to novel therapeutics and interventional strategies that augment healthcare delivery. Together, we creatively address the potential research gaps in neuro-ophthalmology and look for innovative approaches to meeting the needs of all our constituency research groups.
We located on the 8th floor, Xie-Li building, Tzu Chi general hospital, Hualien, Taiwan. And we look forward to working with you in person soon!
If you have any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Our vision
Our lab focuses on exploring the underlying molecular mechanism of the neuro-protection in optic nerve as well as assessing the benefits of stem cells & iPSCs for the restoration of visions in the patients. Also, our researcher is on the half way revealing the therapeutic effects of the herbal extract on various eye related disorders. The National and international researcher with curiosity in various eye disorders working in our lab is moving forth with the aim to make a cutting-edge breakthrough in the field of neuro-ophthalmology research, benefiting the ophthalmic patients.
Our Mission
The researchers from our lab have been revealing the numbers of unexplained issues in the vision research and have contributed scientifically by publishing the high-quality research. Our lab is one of the leading eye research institutes in Taiwan. Our team has moto to make Institute internationally recognized center of research excellence in the community vision sciences and neuro-ophthalmology, for translating basic and applied science to clinical application for treating the visually challenged people.
