Degenerative arthritis
Degenerative arthritis is one of the most common form of joint diseases and is directly related to aging. The main lesion lies within the joint interface of two bones;Cartilage damage and worn may be detected by X-ray. The main symptoms of degenerative arthritis include pain, stiffness, swelling and deformation. If symptoms present, typical managements including physical therapy, e.g. electrotherapy, thermotherapy and rest, are usually applied as first line. If the symptom persists, medications including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents may be required.
Currently, there are various markedly available nutritional-supplements for articular cartilage reserve i.e. glucosamine, may provide nutrients and protect undamaged articular cartilage for improved durability of joints. Many researches suggested positive effects of glucosamine in the arthritic population, however, in clinical settings only half of the patients achieved satisfactory outcomes. In addition, intra-articular injection of nutritional lubricants i.e. hyaluronic acid may enhance joint lubrication. Approximately 80% of the users may achieve clinically satisfactory outcomes; however, another treatment via intra-articular injection is to be applied periodically to maintain the positive clinical effects.
